The experience
The drive from Port Elizabeth takes 35 minutes to reach Addo Elephant National Park, where the morning unfolds as a guided safari through one of South Africa's largest protected areas. You travel by vehicle through the park spotting elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos and buffalo in their natural habitat: the Big 5 that define a complete African wildlife experience. The guide navigates the park roads and stops at vantage points, pointing out animals and explaining the ecosystem as the day moves through the reserve.
Lunch is a heartly traditional South African braai (BBQ) served in the heart of Addo Park itself, giving you time to rest and absorb what you've seen before the afternoon shift. Afterward, a 15-minute drive takes you to Addo Afrique, a private game lodge, where the second half of the day turns to foot. A guided giraffe walk lets you approach these animals on the ground at close range: a different kind of encounter than the vehicle-based safari of the morning, and one that changes how you see their scale and movement.
Pickup is included from your hotel in Port Elizabeth or, if you're arriving by ship, directly from the cruise terminal. The tour runs seven to eight hours total, and children from age 3 are welcome. Bottled water and tea are provided throughout the day alongside the lunch included in the price.
