Five hours to walk among African penguins and drive one of the world's most scenic coastal roads

You're picked up from your Cape Town hotel and driven through Bo-Kaap and past the Twelve Apostles before Chapman's Peak Drive opens up the Atlantic coast. A stop in Noordhoek Farm Village gives you time for coffee, then you spend one and a half to two hours at Boulders Beach walking among African penguins and photographing them on the sand. On the return, you photograph Muizenberg's colorful beach huts before drop-off back in the city, all within five hours.

4h–5h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Visit Bo-kaap neighborhood
  • Stop for photos at Twelve Apostles
  • Drive along Chapman's Peak Drive
  • Explore Noordhoek Farm Village
  • Visit Boulders Beach penguin colony
  • Stop at Muizenberg beach huts
  • Return to Cape Town city center

The Experience

The penguins are smaller than you'd expect. That's the first thing that hits you when the boardwalk at Foxy Beach comes into view — these African penguins, waddling across the sand in their tuxedo markings, are compact, almost delicate. The tour gives you an hour and a half to two hours at Boulders Beach itself, which means you get past the initial shock and actually watch them. A 10-minute walk from the main boardwalk takes you onto Boulders Beach proper, where you can stand on the same sand as the penguins and photograph them without the crowd pressing behind you. Your guide stays with you throughout but leaves space to move at your own pace, which matters when you're trying to get that shot or just sit and watch for a while.

Before you reach the penguins, though, the tour takes you on Chapman's Peak Drive — a 9-kilometer coastal pass that winds between Hout Bay and Noordhoek with views that justify the detour. Your guide stops where it's safe to pull over, and you get out and stand there with the Atlantic below and the Chapman's mountains rising up. It's the kind of drive local schools organize trips around, which tells you something. The route also includes Bo-Kaap, where the cobbled streets and colorful buildings date back to the 1700s; a stop at the Twelve Apostles mountain range for photographs; and 30 minutes in Noordhoek Farm Village, where you can grab coffee or browse the shops before heading to Boulders. On the way back to Cape Town, you stop at Muizenberg Beach to photograph the famous colorful changing huts — the kind of iconic Cape Town shot that ends up on your phone and stays there.

The whole thing runs five hours, which is tight but deliberate. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, along with an air-conditioned vehicle and bottled water. The guide handles the navigation and the history; you handle deciding how long to linger at each stop. If you've got a short window in Cape Town and the penguins are non-negotiable, this tour compresses the essentials without feeling rushed.
