The Experience

Ever wondered if your heart can pound so loud you hear it underwater? That’s what happened to me the first time we lowered ourselves into the shark cage off Seal Island, just outside Cape Town. The boat ride out from Simon’s Town was quieter than I expected — everyone bundled up against the early chill, sipping coffee that tasted a bit salty from the sea air. Our guide, Pieter, had this dry sense of humor; he told us about the Bronze Whaler sharks we might see (I’d never heard of them before), and then pointed out a pod of dolphins skimming alongside us like it was no big deal.

I’m not going to lie — slipping into that wetsuit was awkward (why is neoprene always so clingy?), but once I was in the water, all those nerves sort of faded. You could smell the ocean through your mask, sharp and cold. The first shark appeared out of nowhere — bronze and sleek, moving with this slow confidence right past the bars. Someone next to me let out a muffled “whoa” through their snorkel. Pieter tapped on the cage and grinned at us above water; apparently my wide-eyed stare was pretty obvious. We didn’t see any Great Whites that morning (they’re more common April to September), but honestly, I didn’t care — just being there with those sharks was enough.

Afterwards, back on deck, we warmed up with hot drinks and snacks while swapping stories with a couple from Joburg who’d done this three times already (which made me feel slightly less brave). The sun finally broke through as we headed back toward Simon’s Town — gulls wheeling overhead, everyone a little quieter than before. There’s something about seeing those animals up close that sticks with you. I still think about that moment when everything went silent except for my own breathing.
