The experience

Atlantis Dunes, just outside Cape Town on the West Coast, holds the only real white sand dunes in the area. You start with a safety briefing and instruction on how to operate the quad bike, about 10 to 15 minutes, then ride out onto the dunes themselves for 45 minutes. The dunes shift constantly and rise up to 50 metres, so the landscape changes with each run. A guide leads the group the whole way, and photo stops are built into the ride time, so you can capture the scale of the place before moving on.

The quad bikes are fully automatic, which means no manual transmission to manage while you're navigating sand and slope. Helmets and all the gear you need come with the booking. Bring your phone or camera for the photo stops: the operator doesn't provide one, but the viewpoint is set up for it. If you're bringing children aged 4 to 12, they ride as passengers with an adult. One adult per child is required. Everyone needs to bring a valid passport or South African ID on the day, as you'll complete a City of Cape Town indemnity form on site before you ride.
