You spend an hour on a semi-automatic quad bike riding through the white dunes of the Witzand Aquila Nature Reserve, a protected area managed by the City of Cape Town that sits above an underground aquifer supplying water to neighbouring regions. The reserve holds antelopes, reptiles and plants like the Fauna species found nowhere else in the city. A guide leads the ride and stops at a photo spot where views stretch to Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, the only nuclear facility in Africa, visible across the landscape.

The bikes are user-friendly and require no riding experience. They handle like standard ATVs but shift themselves. Before the tour starts, you arrive 20 to 30 minutes early to learn how the bike works and go through a safety briefing with the team. Helmets and hair nets are provided. You can leave personal belongings with staff on site while you ride, so you travel light through the dunes without worrying about your phone or valuables.
