The Experience

I woke up in Singapore and by the time I’d finished my coffee, two people were already waiting downstairs: one driver, one guide. They checked our passports right there in the hotel driveway (felt almost VIP), then whisked us into a minivan. The border crossing was weirdly smooth: no standing in line, just a sort of surreal drive-through with our guide handling everything. That first hour north, I kept staring out at endless palm plantations while our guide talked about deforestation and orangutans. Didn’t expect to be thinking about rainforest loss before breakfast, but it stuck with me.

Malacca hit me all at once: the heat, the red Dutch Square buildings, the faint smell of incense near Cheng Hoon Teng Temple. We did this slow river cruise past houses that looked patched together by hand (our guide pointed out some were built without nails, how?). The water had this greenish tint and you could hear kids laughing somewhere behind the trees. There was a moment when we drifted under a bridge and I caught sight of an old man waving from his porch. Lunch was quick but good (I went for something Malaysian I can’t pronounce, Li laughed when I tried). Then we were off again toward Kuala Lumpur. Batu Caves looked wild from below (just limestone cliffs and monkeys darting around), and climbing up those steps made my legs burn but it was worth it for the colors and all the offerings left behind. In KL itself, everything felt bigger: Petronas Twin Towers shining against the sky (the elevator ride up is kind of dizzying), Merdeka Square where our guide told us about independence night. There’s this mix of old colonial stuff and glassy skyscrapers. It doesn’t really match but somehow works.

On the way back south after dinner (somewhere near Pagoh, I don’t remember much except being tired and happy), I realized how much ground we’d covered in just one day trip from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur & Malacca. Our driver still seemed fresh. I guess having two staff really does help on these long days.
