The Experience

We started right at 6pm—our guide, Li, was already waiting in the hotel lobby with this easy grin. She handed us little bottles of water (I didn’t realize how much I’d need it) and we headed out into that thick Singapore dusk. First stop: Gardens by the Bay. The Flower Dome is... well, it’s huge, but what really got me was the air inside. It’s cool, almost chilly compared to outside, and smells like eucalyptus and something sweet I couldn’t place. Li pointed out some Mediterranean plants—she tried to get me to pronounce “Protea” properly but gave up laughing. I didn’t expect to feel so tiny under all that glass.

The Cloud Forest is just next door but feels like a different planet. Mist everywhere, my glasses fogged up instantly (classic). There’s this waterfall that you hear before you see it—a kind of low thunder echoing off the walls. We wandered along raised walkways with people snapping photos or just staring quietly. At one point I leaned over a railing and felt actual droplets on my arms. It’s weirdly peaceful in there even with all the voices bouncing around.

After that we drove past Marina Barrage—Li explained how it helps keep the city from flooding (she seemed proud of it). Then Clarke Quay: neon reflections on the water, music thumping from bars, couples taking selfies everywhere. The bumboat ride down the Singapore River was slower than I expected—in a good way. The breeze finally picked up and for a moment everything felt still except for our boat gliding past old warehouses and new glass towers. Our guide told stories about how this used to be full of spice traders; I tried to imagine what it must’ve smelled like back then.

She dropped us back at our hotel after—my feet were tired but my head was buzzing with all these colors and sounds. I still think about that first breath inside the Flower Dome—so cold and green it almost didn’t feel real.
