The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the clang of woks echoing out from Lau Pa Sat — honestly, it’s louder than you’d expect for a food market at night. Our driver (I think his name was Mr. Tan?) waved us over with this easy smile and pointed out where to get satay that “doesn’t cheat on the peanut sauce.” I tried to say thank you in Malay but mostly got a laugh. The smell of grilled meat and something sweet — pandan maybe? — stuck to my shirt for hours.

After we ate way too much (I still don’t know how many skewers I had), we hopped back in the car and headed towards the river. The city feels different from the water — cooler, quieter somehow even with all those neon reflections. There were couples taking selfies near Boat Quay, and someone playing old pop songs on a speaker by Clarke Quay. And then Gardens by the Bay: those Supertrees lit up like something out of a movie, music thumping through the ground. My photos are all blurry but it didn’t matter. We ended up just sitting under one of them until most people left, not really talking much — just listening to that strange quiet you get when a big crowd disappears all at once.
