The Experience

I didn’t think I’d be so taken by Singapore at night. There’s something about the way the air cools just enough after sunset, and suddenly the city feels both enormous and strangely close. We started at Merlion Park—our guide, Shirin, handed out cold water bottles (bless her) and pointed out how the Merlion’s tail is supposed to represent Singapore’s fishing roots. The skyline was already glowing behind us. I tried to get that classic photo but mostly just ended up laughing at myself—my hair was everywhere in the wind.

The Singapore River cruise was honestly my favorite part of this night tour. You glide past Clarke Quay and under these old bridges—Anderson Bridge looked almost ghostly in the evening light. Shirin told us about the Fullerton Hotel being a post office once (I never would’ve guessed). The boat had this high roof so you could see everything—the shophouses all lit up like someone spilled a box of colored pencils along the water. I caught a whiff of satay from somewhere upstream and got hungry right then.

Gardens by the Bay was next—everyone talks about those Supertrees but seeing them during Garden Rhapsody is something else. The music started soft, then suddenly there were lights everywhere, moving with the sound. I stood there with my head tilted back until my neck hurt but couldn’t look away. Some kids were lying on the ground to watch; I almost joined them but chickened out last minute. Afterward we walked over to Marina Bay Sands for the Spectra Light & Water Show. It’s hard to describe—lasers bouncing off mist, fountains dancing around each other, people just quietly watching together like it was normal to see magic on a Tuesday night.

If you want, you can end at Lau Pa Sat for dinner—I did, mostly because Shirin said their satay stalls are famous and she wasn’t wrong. The place smelled like grilled meat and sweet sauce; it was loud and bright and felt exactly right after all that city sparkle. Walking back alone later felt different—the city seemed softer somehow. I still think about that view from the river, honestly.
