The experience
The drive from Belgrade takes two and a half hours heading toward Western Serbia. Your first stop is the House on the Drina, an isolated structure made of logs that sits on a river stone. A photo spot that has drawn attention online. You'll spend time here before continuing to the train station, timed to catch the departure of the Šargan 8, a narrow-gauge railway that now runs only for sightseeing. The train operates from April through October. If you travel outside those months, the tour substitutes a visit to Rača Monastery, the oldest in the Tara Mountains, with views of the same landscape.
The train ride lasts almost two and a half hours, with stops at several viewpoints where you can see across Mokra Gora. The narrow gauge and the route itself are what make the views possible: the track winds through terrain a car cannot reach. After you return to the station, the tour heads to Mećavnik, also known as Drvengrad, the wooden village that director Emir Kusturica built during filming of his movie "Life is a Miracle." You'll have a meal there and time to walk the site before the drive back to Belgrade, arriving late in the afternoon.

Is this one for you?Choose the shared option if you're comfortable traveling with other passengers and want to keep costs down. Pick the private tour with an English-speaking guide if you prefer a dedicated vehicle and someone to explain the stops and history along the way. Either way, the full day (nearly twelve hours from pickup to return) works best if you're based in Belgrade and want to see three distinct sites without arranging your own transport.
