Iron Gate Gorge day trip from Belgrade: Golubac Fortress & Kazan
Medieval fortress, 8000-year-old settlement, and the Danube at its narrowest
A private day tour from Belgrade follows the Danube into the Iron Gates Gorge, starting at Golubac Fortress (a 13th-century stronghold at the gorge entrance) and continuing to Lepenski Vir, a prehistoric site with trapezoidal houses dating to around 8000 BC. The route reaches the Kazan section, where the river narrows between steep limestone cliffs: deeper into the gorge than most similar tours. Lunch at a local eco-village on the riverbank breaks the drive before return to Belgrade in the early evening.

- Visit Golubac Fortress
- Explore Lepenski Vir settlement
- Drive to Kazan viewpoints
- Lunch at local eco-village
- Return to Belgrade
The experience
You're picked up from your Belgrade hotel and driven east toward the Danube. The landscape opens gradually as you approach Golubac Fortress, a 13th-century stronghold positioned directly above the river at the point where it begins to narrow. Your guide explains its strategic role in controlling the Danube corridor through different periods of history. (Note: on Mondays the fortress is closed, so the stop becomes a photo pause from the road.)
The next stop is Lepenski Vir, one of Europe's oldest known settlements, occupied around 8000 BC. Inside the modern visitor center you see the remains of distinctive trapezoidal houses and stone sculptures that reveal how early communities lived in close connection with the river. From there the drive continues through Iron Gates National Park toward the Kazan viewpoints (Mali Kazan and Veliki Kazan), where the Danube narrows between steep limestone cliffs. This tour reaches deeper into the gorge than standard day trips, so you see the river at its most dramatic, with Romania visible just across the water.
After the sightseeing, you stop for lunch at a small local eco-village on the Danube's banks, where a set menu of traditional regional dishes is served. The return drive to Belgrade begins afterward, with drop-off around 7 pm.

Top questions
What is Golubac Fortress and why does it sit right above the Danube?
Golubac Fortress is a 13th-century medieval stronghold positioned at the entrance to the Iron Gates Gorge, directly above the river where it begins to narrow. It was built to control an important passage along the Danube corridor and marks the strategic point where the landscape shifts from wide plains into the gorge.
Can I actually enter Lepenski Vir, or is it just a viewpoint?
Lepenski Vir has a modern visitor center where you walk inside to see the remains of prehistoric trapezoidal houses and stone sculptures from around 8000 BC. It is an archaeological site with physical remains on display, not an outdoor viewpoint.
How deep into the Iron Gates Gorge does this tour actually go?
The tour reaches the Kazan section (Mali Kazan and Veliki Kazan), which is the narrowest and most impressive part of the Danube Gorge. Most standard day tours do not go this far, so you see the river at its most dramatic, with steep limestone cliffs rising on both sides.
Is lunch included in the price, or do I pay separately?
Lunch is not included in the tour price. You stop at a local eco-village on the Danube's banks where a set menu of traditional regional dishes is available. Lunch costs approximately 20€ per person and is paid on the day.
