You leave Belgrade heading downstream along the Danube to Golubac Fortress, where the river is widest and the medieval stronghold sits on a strategic bend that shaped centuries of Balkan warfare. The boat takes you through the narrowest section of the gorge, past Tabula Traiana (a Roman inscription carved into the rock face), a massive statue of the Dacian king Decebalus carved directly into the cliff, and Mrakonia Monastery perched above the water. The landscape is the point—sheer rock walls, the river's force, the way light hits the gorge at different hours. On the way back, you stop at a viewpoint on a hill above the river where the whole gorge opens up below you. Then comes Lepenski Vir, an archaeological site where Europe's oldest urban settlement sat 8,000 years ago.
