The experience
The day starts with a 7am pickup in Belgrade and a drive into the mountains toward Mokra Gora. The licensed guide travels with you and speaks English, narrating the route through the landscape and sharing stories of Serbia's First World War history as the road climbs through the western ranges. You stop at Drvengrad, the wooden village Kusturica designed and built as a film set. It sits on the mountainside as a working ethno-village where you can walk through the structures and photograph the setting.
The Romantica train, a restored engine from the 19th century, picks you up for a two-hour journey through the same remote terrain. The train moves slowly enough to see the landscape change: untouched nature and wildlife visible from the open cars. This is the Šargan 8 railway, the narrow-gauge line that once ran from Belgrade down to the Adriatic coast before modern highways replaced it. The ride itself is the point: the slow pace, the old train, the forest and valleys rolling past.
After the train returns, you're driven back to your Belgrade pickup point. The whole day takes 10 hours. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and WiFi is available onboard during the drive. Children from age 2 are welcome. Specialized infant seats can be arranged. You'll want to bring a camera and wear layers: the mountain air shifts as the day moves on.
