The Experience

The van picks you up from your hotel in Belgrade at the start of the morning. You'll spend the first two and a half hours driving west toward the Dinaric Alps, watching the landscape shift from city outskirts to rolling forest and mountain slopes. Your English-speaking guide talks through the region as you go — the food, the history, the way people live out here — and by the time you arrive at Mokra Gora, you're ready to step onto the Šargan Eight, a narrow-gauge railway that hasn't carried regular passengers since 1974.

The train itself is the kind of thing that stops you mid-conversation. Wooden seats, a wood-burning stove, the sound of metal on metal that hasn't changed since 1925. You ride for an hour and a half, climbing and looping through the mountains — the track actually makes a figure-eight to gain elevation — and the guide points out the viewpoints where you can see across the valleys. It's slow and deliberate, nothing like modern trains, which is exactly the point. When you get off at the station, you've crossed a century without leaving the country.

From there it's a short drive to Drvengrad, the wooden town built by Serbian film director Emir Kusturica during the shooting of his film "Life Is a Miracle." He took old wooden chalets from the mountainside, restored them, and arranged them into a village that looks like it was always there but wasn't. You have time to walk around, look at the buildings, and eat lunch if you want — the food isn't included, but the local specialties are the kind of thing people remember. After that, you continue to Bajina Bašta, a small town in the foothills of Mount Tara, where the House on the Drina sits on a stone in the middle of the river. It's a single log cabin, isolated and improbable, and it's been photographed so many times that seeing it in person feels both familiar and strange.

The last stop is Kapija Podrinja, a viewpoint overlooking the Drina valley and the surrounding mountains. From there, you head back toward Belgrade, another two and a half hours through the Povlen range with one stop along the way. You arrive back at your hotel in the afternoon, having covered three of the most photographed spots in Western Serbia without arranging transport, train tickets, or entrance fees yourself.
