The Experience

The day starts with a pickup from your Belgrade hotel at 8 a.m. and a drive west into Serbia's nature. Your first stop is the Gate of Podrinje, a viewpoint marking the entrance to the Drina River Valley—a place to step out and photograph the landscape before moving deeper into the region. From there, the route reaches Bajina Basta, a small town at the foot of Tara Mountain, where the House on the Rock becomes visible: an actual dwelling built on a stone outcrop in the middle of the river, the image of which once appeared on a National Geographic cover. It is one of those sights that photographs do not quite prepare you for.

The tour then proceeds into Tara National Park itself. A stop at Zelenika offers views over Bajina Basta and Perucac Lake before the group moves to the walking section. From a designated point, you hike to Banjska Rock, described as the most beautiful viewpoint in Serbia—a high ridge with a splendid panoramic view down the Drina River Canyon. The walk is short and pleasant, though the site sits at altitude and depends on good weather; if clouds or rain move in, the operator substitutes a visit to the Sargan 8 Train at Mokra Gora, a narrow-gauge railway through the mountains. After the viewpoint or the train, the group breaks for lunch at a traditional restaurant before the three-hour drive back to Belgrade.

Your guide speaks English throughout the day and travels with you in an air-conditioned vehicle—a car if the group is small (1–3 people) or a minivan for larger parties (4–7 people). Hotel pickup and drop-off, park entry, bottled water and WiFi on board are all included.
