The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the echo of our footsteps on the old stones—just past the thick gate of Manasija Monastery, it was suddenly quiet except for birds. Our guide, Marko, pointed out scars on the fortress walls where Ottomans tried to break through. He had this way of telling stories that made you look twice at even a crumbling brick. Inside the church, I remember the smell—wax and something earthy—and those frescoes, saints with huge eyes staring right back at you. I tried to pronounce “Despotova Kula” (the big tower) and got it wrong; Marko just grinned.

After that, we drove through these rolling green hills—Serbia’s Pomoravlje region is softer than I expected—and stopped at Resava Cave. The air changed as soon as we stepped inside: chilly enough that my glasses fogged up for a second. It’s darker than you’d think, but then your eyes adjust and you see these wild shapes overhead—stalactites like melted candles. Our group went quiet for a bit; someone whispered about how old everything was (millions of years). The guide shone his flashlight on a rock formation that looked like a dragon, or maybe a loaf of bread depending who you asked.

I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed at Veliki Buk waterfall after all that stone and darkness. The sound is constant—water tumbling down over mossy rocks—and there’s this faint smell of wet leaves in the air. Lunch was simple but good: grilled trout and fresh bread (not included in the tour price), eaten outside while local kids splashed around below us. I still think about that view sometimes—sunlight flickering through trees onto the spray.
