The Experience

I didn’t expect the drive out of Belgrade to feel so different so quickly — fields just rolling forever, and our guide Milica telling stories about old borders and battles as if she’d lived them herself. The air changed too; it smelled green, almost sweet, when we stopped at Fruška Gora. There was this quiet around the monastery that made even my phone seem loud. I’m not religious but I felt something there — maybe just how old everything was, or the way the monk nodded at us, half-smiling.

Sremski Karlovci was next, and honestly, I’d never heard of it before booking this day trip from Belgrade to Novi Sad. The main square looked like a painting — pastel houses, lions on a fountain, kids chasing pigeons. We tried Bermet wine in this tiny cellar (the owner poured it like he was sharing a secret), and Milica said it was served on the Titanic. Not sure if that’s true but it tasted deep and spicy and I still think about it when I see red wine now. Li laughed when I tried to say “Karlovci” right — probably butchered it.

The Petrovaradin Fortress is huge — you don’t really get how big until you’re wandering those tunnels and suddenly there’s the Danube below you, slow and gray-blue. There were teenagers playing guitar near the Drunk Clock Tower (the hands are swapped — no idea why) and for a second it felt like everyone in Novi Sad had come up just to watch the river with us. We drifted into town after that; Liberty Square was busy but not rushed, people sitting outside with coffee even though clouds were threatening rain. Our guide pointed out the synagogue — yellow stone glowing against all that sky — and then let us wander for a bit before lunch.
