You blend like the Malt Master, tasting and adjusting until the whisky is yours.

A whisky making class at Glengoyne Distillery in Scotland where you blend five single cask whiskies into a unique bottle of Glengoyne Highland Single Malt, guided by a Distillery Ambassador. You tour the distillery and No.1 Warehouse, then sit in the Sample Room to taste cask strength whiskies from American oak and European oak, adjust the blend yourself, and bottle a 20cl bottle with your recipe recorded on the label to take home. Adults only (18+); the experience runs about 90 minutes.

The Experience

The experience starts with a guided tour through Glengoyne Distillery and No.1 Warehouse, where you see how the whisky is made and stored. Then you move to the Sample Room in the Distillery Manager's House, where the real work begins: five cask strength whiskies sit in front of you, hand-selected from the warehouse. The difference shows immediately—the colour shifts between American oak and European oak, between previous fills of sherry and bourbon. You taste each one.

From there, you step into the role of Malt Master, the person who balances flavours from different casks to create Glengoyne's signature whisky. You add a little from the bourbon cask, bring out more sherry wood, taste, adjust, tinker until the blend is exactly what you want. There's no formula to follow—you're tasting your way to a single cask strength, un-chillfiltered Highland Single Malt that exists nowhere else. Once you've landed on it, the distillery bottles it in a 20cl Glengoyne bottle and labels it with a note of your cask composition so you know what you made.

Glengoyne is the only distillery in Scotland running this experience, which means the setup, the selection of whiskies, and the instruction all belong to them alone. The Distillery Ambassador guides you through the tasting and the blending, answering questions as you work. The whole thing takes about 90 minutes from tour to bottled bottle.

Top questions

What's the difference between the whiskies I'll be tasting at Glengoyne?

The five cask strength whiskies are hand-selected from the Glengoyne warehouse and show the impact of different oak types and previous fills. American oak and European oak produce different colours and flavours, as do casks that previously held sherry versus bourbon. You'll taste each one to understand how those differences shape the final blend.

Can I really create my own whisky, or am I just choosing from preset blends?

You create your own blend by tasting each cask strength whisky and deciding how much of each one goes into your bottle. You add a little from one cask, adjust with another, taste, and keep adjusting until the flavour is exactly what you want—there's no preset formula. The distillery then bottles and labels your unique creation.

What do I get to take home from this experience?

You take home a 20cl bottle of your own Glengoyne Single Malt, un-chillfiltered and at cask strength, with a label recording your cask composition so you know what you blended into it.

How long does the whole experience take?

The experience runs about 90 minutes total, including the guided tour of the distillery and No.1 Warehouse, the tasting in the Sample Room, and the blending and bottling of your whisky.

Is there an age requirement for this experience?

Yes, you must be at least 18 years old to participate. The experience involves tasting and blending whisky, so under-18s cannot take part.
