The Experience

I didn’t really know what to expect from a full-day Kigali city tour — maybe some history, a few nice views. But the first thing that hit me was how alive everything felt. Our guide, Jean-Paul, picked us up right on time (he waved at us from outside the hotel lobby — I liked that he wasn’t in a hurry). He gave us this quick rundown of what we’d see, but honestly, it was the way he talked about his city that made me curious. There’s this quiet pride in how clean Kigali is; you notice it right away. No trash anywhere. Even the air felt lighter than I thought it would.

The Kimironko market was next — and wow, it’s loud in the best way. People calling out prices, laughing over piles of mangoes and cassava. I tried to say “muraho” (hello) to one of the women selling avocados and she just grinned at my accent. Jean-Paul helped me ask for a photo (I wouldn’t have dared on my own). The colors were everywhere — bright cloths hanging above buckets of spices. After that came Akagera river — not what I pictured at all: wide marshland, birds flicking through reeds, and this feeling that the city just sort of melts into green hills.

Lunch was at some spot near KBC where everyone seemed to know our guide (he got teased for ordering extra brochettes). We ate ugali and some spicy beans — simple but good. Walking through the car-free zone after lunch felt almost surreal; so quiet compared to the market earlier. Then there was Nyamirambo — kids playing football in alleys, women chatting under jacaranda trees. It’s mostly Muslim here and you can feel a different rhythm somehow.

The hardest part was visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial. It’s not easy to describe what it feels like standing there — so much sorrow in one place but also this sense of people refusing to forget or be defined by tragedy alone. The silence inside is heavy; even Jean-Paul spoke softer there. I still think about that moment sometimes when things get noisy back home.

We ended with coffee at M. Hotel (I went for ginger tea instead) while Jean-Paul told us about his family growing up here before everything changed in ‘94. The sun set behind Mount Kigali as we drove back down — just golden light on red earth and people walking home with shopping bags swinging by their sides. If you’re thinking about a day trip in Kigali with a local guide… well, I’d do it again just for those small conversations along the way.
