The experience
Your guide picks you up from your hotel around 10am and drives you through Kigali in a private vehicle. The city sits on several hills and valleys across three districts (Nyarugenge, Kicukiro and Gasabo), and the tour moves through the major historical and cultural sites that shape Rwanda's story. Lunch is included partway through the day, so you're not managing meals separately.
The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the centerpiece. It holds three permanent exhibitions, with the largest documenting the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. A children's memorial, an exhibition on genocidal violence worldwide, the Education Centre, gardens and the Genocide Archive of Rwanda form part of the site. It's both a tribute and a learning space. You'll also visit the central farmer's market, where the real rhythms of Kigali life show: fruits, clothes, handmade souvenirs, and uniformed yellow porters at the entrance who help carry bags for visitors.
Mount Kigali, the hill the city was named after, sits directly west of the center in Nyarugenge District at 1,853 metres. From there you get expansive views east and north across Kigali, and south and west toward the Southern and Eastern Provinces. The tour wraps by 3pm and your guide returns you to your hotel.
