The Experience

We’d barely buckled our seatbelts when our driver-guide—Jean-Paul—started pointing out the hills rolling outside the window. Kigali’s not what I pictured: it’s green, almost soft around the edges, and there’s this gentle hum from motorbikes weaving through traffic. Our first stop was the Kigali Genocide Memorial. I thought I was ready for it, but honestly, nothing really prepares you. The quiet inside felt heavier than silence—just footsteps on cool tiles and the faint smell of flowers left by families. Jean-Paul let us take our time; he answered questions if we had them but didn’t rush us. I still think about that moment when a local woman lit a candle near the wall of names.

Afterwards, we drove to Kandt House Museum. The rooms are small but packed—old photos of pre-colonial Rwanda, odd colonial relics (I laughed at a stuffed crocodile in one corner), and then suddenly you’re looking at maps showing how Kigali grew into this lively city. From there it was up Mount Kigali for a view that just sort of sneaks up on you—the city laid out like patchwork, with kids playing football down below and someone selling roasted corn at the roadside. We stopped for lunch at a local spot (can’t remember the name), but the sambaza fish was crispy and perfect with spicy pili-pili sauce. There was a soft drink included—I picked Fanta Passion because everyone else did.

We wandered through Biryogo Car-Free Street next. It’s loud in a good way—music from speakers somewhere overhead, people laughing over plates of brochettes, women weaving baskets in bright colors right on the curb. Jean-Paul introduced us to his friend who runs a tiny coffee stall; he handed me a cup so strong my hands shook for an hour after. Then came murals splashed across walls (one had gorillas painted in electric blue), and we ducked into Nyamirambo Women’s Center where someone tried to teach me “murakoze” (thank you)—I probably butchered it.

Later we visited Niyo Art Gallery—honestly didn’t expect to be so moved by paintings of everyday life here—and if there’s time, Kimironko Market is chaos in technicolor: mangoes stacked like pyramids, fabric stalls with patterns I’ve never seen before. By drop-off I felt like I’d seen more than just sights; it was more like meeting Kigali itself for a few hours. Can’t say everything sunk in right away—it’s still settling now as I write this.
