The experience
Your guide arrives at your Kigali hotel before dawn and drives east through farmland and local markets for two and a half hours to reach Akagera by 7:30 a.m. After registration at park headquarters, you board a Landcruiser with a pop-up roof and spend the morning scanning the savanna for lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, rhinoceroses, giraffes, antelopes, hyenas and warthogs. The vehicle stops when wildlife appears. The open roof and guide's knowledge of where animals move through the park's diverse habitats shape what you see.
At 2 p.m., you leave the vehicle for a boat on Lake Ihema, where hippos surface near the water's edge and crocodiles sun themselves on the banks. The lake holds migratory and resident bird species the savanna does not. The boat ride offers a different angle on the park's ecosystem and a break from the vehicle before the afternoon game drive resumes.
A hot lunch happens between the morning drive and the boat, and you depart the park at 5 p.m. for the return to Kigali, arriving around 7:30 p.m. depending on traffic. WiFi is available on board the Landcruiser throughout the day.
