You drive four hours through Rwanda's landscape, stop at the King's Palace in Nyanza, have lunch, then walk the 200-meter hanging platform that lets you spot birds and primates feeding in the treetops before returning to Kigali.

The experience

The day starts at 5 a.m. with pickup from your hotel for the four-hour drive to Nyungwe National Park. The route itself is part of the experience: Rwanda's hills and valleys roll past the window the whole way. Midway, you stop at the King's Palace in Nyanza to step into the nation's royal history before continuing to the park.

After lunch, you reach the canopy walk: a hanging platform built 50 meters above the ground, stretching 200 meters across the tallest trees of Nyungwe. The height puts you at eye level with birds and primates that feed and move through the canopy: a vantage point no ground-level trail can match. You cross it at your own pace, taking in the aerial view of the forest below. The walk itself is the core of the day. Everything else is the frame around it.

Your driver guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or Kinyarwanda and stays with you throughout. The return drive to Kigali or the airport leaves you back by evening. Park entry, transportation, the canopy fee, lunch and bottled water are all included. You bring only yourself and a camera.
