The experience

The drive from Kigali takes 4 hours and 30 minutes, heading southwest through Rwanda's terraced green hills. Your guide picks you up at 9am and can stop at any view that catches your eye. The road itself is part of the experience. On the way, you have the option to visit the king's palace, the Ethnographic Museum, or genocide memorials: each a short detour the guide can arrange. You arrive at Nyungwe in the late afternoon.

Your first evening offers a choice: canopy walk suspended above the forest floor, a waterfall visit, or a nature walk through the tea plantation that borders the lodge. Dinner comes at the resort, and you sleep facing the forest itself. The chimpanzee trek begins before dawn on day two. At 5am, your guide collects you for a short briefing at the park reception, then drives to the trek's starting point. When you locate a chimpanzee group, you spend an hour with them: watching how they move, feed, care for their young, and interact as a family. Your guide explains their behavior and social structure. After the trek, you have lunch, then the drive back to Kigali ends at your accommodation by afternoon.

The tour includes all transport in a comfortable 4x4, your professional guide in English or French, meals (lunch and dinner on day one, lunch on day two), and overnight accommodation at the lodge. Park entry fees and the chimpanzee permit ($250 per person) are separate and paid on arrival. Pickup and drop-off are from your Kigali location or airport.
