The Experience

The day starts at 4:30 am when your driver-guide picks you up from your Kigali hotel and heads north toward Ruhengeri. The drive takes 2.5 hours through the thousand hills of Rwanda's northern province—open grasslands, bamboo forests and swamps give way to the volcanic landscape as you approach the park. Volcanoes National Park sits in one of Africa's most mountainous zones and borders three other protected areas: Virunga in DR Congo, Mgahinga in Uganda, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Five volcanoes shape the terrain—Karisimbi, Sabinyo, Bisoke, Muhavura and Gahinga—with Mount Karisimbi rising to 4,507 meters. About 360 mountain gorillas remain in the world today; roughly half live in this park.

At 7:30 am you arrive at park headquarters in Kinigi Village for a briefing from a ranger who explains the trekking rules and regulations. Then you enter the forest with your guide. The trek itself lasts between 2 and 5 hours—the duration depends entirely on where the gorilla family has moved that day. You trek with a maximum of seven other visitors, all assigned to the same gorilla family. Once you locate them, you're permitted to stay for one hour watching them in their natural habitat before heading back down the mountain.

After trekking, there's an option to visit Iby'Iwacu culture village to learn about Rwandan traditions—traditional medicine, dances, wedding customs, and local handcrafts. Meals and drinks are included throughout the day, eaten with locals. Your driver-guide brings you back to your Kigali hotel by evening.
