The Experience

There's something about the idea of Dracula's Castle that pulls you in before you even arrive in Bucharest. You book this day trip half for the history, half for the myth — and by the time the minibus picks you up in the early morning (between 6:40 and 8:30, depending on the day), you're already wondering what's real and what's been romanticized. The drive north toward Sinaia takes about two hours, and the guide talks through Romania's past as the landscape shifts from city to mountain. You stop first at Peles Castle, the former summer residence of Romanian kings, a Neo-Renaissance palace that sits in the Sinaia resort town like something from a storybook. It's an exterior visit — you walk around the grounds, take photos, and the guide fills in the details about the furniture, tapestries, and weapons collections inside. The real history is older and stranger: first documented in 1377, it was a border fortress under Hungarian and then Romanian rule, and in 1912 the municipality of Brasov donated it to the royal family. You get free time to wander the castle yourself, climb the narrow stone stairs, look out from the towers. The legend of Vlad Tepes hangs over it all, but the castle itself is just stone and history — the atmosphere you bring is half the experience.

After Bran, you roll into Brasov, one of Transylvania's most intact medieval towns. The Old Town Square has been the center since 1520, surrounded by Renaissance and Baroque buildings that once housed merchant shops and warehouses. You have free time to walk the streets, see the Black Church — the largest hall-church east of Vienna and impossible to miss with its Gothic spire — and explore the old fortress walls, the White and Black Towers, and the Weaver's Bastion. The guide points out Ecaterina's Gate, built in 1559 with its sharp tower and firing vents, a relic of when this was one of Europe's most secure fortresses. By the time you're back on the bus heading south toward Bucharest, it's late evening, and you're dropped off around 8 or 9 p.m., tired and full of castle stories.
