The experience

Peles Castle rises out of Sinaia like something from a different century: all German Renaissance stone and symmetry, built between 1873 and 1914 as the Romanian royal family's summer residence. After Peles, the route takes you to Brasov, a medieval town that kept its German charm intact through centuries. The walking tour starts in the main square and moves through cobblestone streets lined with centuries-old homes, past the Gothic Black Church (you go inside), the old City Hall, and the watch towers that once defended the citadel. There's a street here that's the narrowest in Europe (it's genuinely narrow, the kind of place where two people have to turn sideways), and it's the sort of detail that sticks with you.
