The experience

You're picked up from your hotel in Brașov in a private air-conditioned vehicle and driven to Bran Castle, built on the site of a Teutonic Knights stronghold from 1212 and first documented in 1377. The castle's connection to Dracula is largely literary, Bram Stoker never visited Transylvania, but the fortress itself holds the medieval architecture and history that drew the association. Your guide remains with the vehicle while you walk through the castle at your own pace, reading the rooms and the stories on your own terms.

The route then climbs into the Carpathian Mountains to Peleș Castle, commissioned by King Carol I in 1873 and completed a decade later as the royal family's summer residence. The castle has 160 rooms, each decorated in a different style: a Music Room styled after India, a Turkish Salon, a Great Salon modeled on Italy, a Council Room after Switzerland. The stained-glass roof of the foyer opens mechanically, and there's a small elevator for the royal family. Peleș was the first European castle to have electricity and its own power plant, with hot and cold running water, central heat and central vacuum: luxuries that were extraordinary in the 1880s. The 60-seat Theater, with a royal box, showed Romania's first movie projection in 1906. Again, your guide waits outside. You explore the rooms and the craftsmanship on your own schedule. Note: tickets must be purchased online at least one week ahead.

The tour ends in Brașov, a medieval city founded 800 years ago to defend the eastern border of the Hungarian empire, now a blend of history and local life ringed by mountains. The full day is 12 hours from pickup to return.
