Northern Bulgaria day trip from Bucharest

- Lunch and visit Arbanassi Village
- Tour Konstantzalieva House and Church of the Nativity

The experience
You leave Bucharest at 8am and cross the Friendship Bridge over the Danube into Bulgaria. The first stop is Basarabov Monastery, a cave monastery carved into the rock and still inhabited by monks. It's the only one of its kind in Bulgaria that remains active and open to visitors: the relics of Saint Dimitrie Basarabov, the patron saint of Bucharest, were discovered here in the 12th century.
Veliko Tarnovo spreads across hills around the Tsarevets Fortress, the royal capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire founded by the Asan brothers in the 12th century. The fortress sits on the main trade route between Europe and Asia Minor, and its stone walls, churches and towers still stand above the Yantra River valley. You'll walk through the site and see the architectural remains, mural paintings and crafts that survive from its days as a seat of emperors. Samovodene Street, lined with artisan workshops, gives you time to browse and buy before moving on.
Arbanasi Village, built by wealthy merchants in the 17th century, is where you'll have free time for lunch at a traditional restaurant. The Konstantzalieva House (a restored merchant's home from that era) shows how the trading families lived. The Church of the Nativity, built half underground, holds one of Bulgaria's finest examples of early woodcarving in its iconostasis. The painted panels depict Orthodox calendar scenes and Old Testament stories. If time allows on the return to Bucharest, the driver makes a short walking stop in Ruse, a harbor town on the Danube, to show you its main commercial street and key landmarks.
