We left Bucharest early — still a bit sleepy — and our guide, Radu, kept things light with stories about old Romanian kings and how Constanța was once the place to be seen. The drive to the Black Sea took just over two hours, but it went by fast (I might’ve nodded off for a minute). Suddenly there was that briny tang in the air, and then we rolled into Constanța, all sun-bleached facades and tangled streets.
We wandered through the Old Town on foot — Radu pointed out the Grand Mosque (he showed us how to spot Ottoman details), then made us guess how old Ovidiu Square was (older than I thought). The Art Nouveau Casino is just sitting there right on the edge of everything, looking both glamorous and kind of sad. You can’t go inside unless you pay extra, but honestly just seeing it against the waves was enough for me. There’s this moment when you stand by the railing and hear nothing but gulls and wind off the water — I still think about that view sometimes.
Lunch was at this restaurant overlooking Tomis Harbor. Grilled fish, bread that tasted like someone’s grandmother made it, a bit of local wine — simple but exactly right after walking around. We had time after to do our own thing: some people went down to Plaja 3 Papuci (the sand gets everywhere), I just sat on a bench watching boats bob around and tried not to spill ice cream on myself. The pace felt easy — no rush back to Bucharest until late afternoon.
