The Experience

“You want more tea?” That’s how it started — our guide, Khalid, holding out this tiny glass cup as we stepped into Al Rahal Camp. The sand was still warm under my shoes, even though it was already late afternoon. There was this low hum of voices from the shaded majlis area, and honestly, the smell of grilled meat kind of hit me before anything else. I’d seen photos of the Qatari desert before but actually sitting there, with that endless sweep of gold and a breeze that kept moving the edge of my scarf — it felt different. Not louder or quieter than I expected. Just… softer? It’s hard to explain.

Khalid told us about his family coming out here on weekends when he was a kid — apparently sandboarding is a thing (I tried it; let’s just say gravity works). The camp itself wasn’t flashy but had these deep cushions everywhere and lanterns hanging from ropes. I ended up next to an older man who poured coffee for everyone and didn’t say much; he just smiled every time someone tried to pronounce “shai.” Li laughed when I tried to say it in Mandarin — probably butchered it — but nobody seemed to mind.
