The Experience
I’ll be honest — I didn’t expect to feel so small out there. We left Doha in the late afternoon and as soon as we hit Sealine Beach, it was like the city faded away. Our driver, Khalid, let some air out of the tires (apparently that’s a must for dune bashing — who knew?) while a couple of camels shuffled by with their bells jingling. The air smelled a bit salty from the Gulf but mostly just clean, like sand after rain. I tried to take a photo but the light kept changing every second.
Dune bashing is… wild. There’s no other word for it. The 4x4 seemed to float and then suddenly drop — my stomach still remembers that first dip. Khalid grinned in the rearview mirror and asked if we wanted “more spice.” He stopped now and then so we could step out onto the sand — at one point, I just stood there barefoot, feeling the heat from earlier in the day still trapped under my toes. We reached Khor Al Udaid right as the sun dipped low; water pooled between dunes like a secret lake. It was quiet except for some distant laughter from another group trying (and failing) to climb a steep dune.
The camp itself was more comfortable than I’d pictured — proper beds, private bathroom (thank goodness), and even AC. Dinner was this smoky BBQ spread eaten around a bonfire while someone played soft music on their phone. I tried naming all the spices in one dish but gave up after cardamom and cumin — our host just smiled and said “family recipe.” Later, we sat on cushions watching sparks drift up into a sky so dark you could see every star. I slept better than I thought I would; maybe it was all that desert air or just being tired from laughing too much.
Waking up before sunrise felt weirdly easy out there. The light comes slowly over those dunes — pink at first, then gold, then almost white once it’s high enough. Breakfast was simple but tasted good (flatbread still warm). Packing up felt too soon; part of me wanted to stay another night just to see what else might surprise me in that silence.
