The experience

What makes this different from a shared boat is the captain himself. He's a certified marine biologist, not just someone who knows the route, so the stops and the commentary shift based on what your group wants to see and how long you want to spend in the water. You check in about half an hour before departure, then the boat heads out to your first stop, usually a shallow reef or beach where you can get comfortable with the snorkel gear and explore at your own pace. The catamaran's design keeps the ride smooth even in chop, which matters when you're six people on a small boat.

The second stop goes into deeper water for a longer snorkel section where the reefs open up. Between stops you get time to relax on deck with views of the islands, and the captain steers back to port with the afternoon light behind you. On a full-day charter, lunch is cooked aboard. On the half-day, snacks and drinks keep you going. The boat carries beer, wine and soft drinks, and you can request meals ahead if anyone has allergies. Sunscreen and a towel are all you need to bring. Everything else, including the snorkel gear, is on the boat.

The half-day works for a morning or afternoon, and the full-day gives you time to island-hop between Vieques, Culebra and Fajardo's Keys without rushing. Groups stay small, one to six people, so there's no waiting for a group briefing or competing for space at the rail. The captain knows his favorite spots and reefs, but he'll change the plan if your group wants to fish, dive deeper or just float and watch the water.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

How does a private catamaran differ from a shared snorkel boat?

You book the entire 36-foot boat for your group of up to six, so the captain tailors the stops, timing and depth to what you want to do. There's no schedule to follow and no strangers on board: the marine biologist captain adjusts the day based on conditions and your interests.

What's the difference between the half-day and full-day charter?

The half-day is four hours with snacks and drinks. The full-day includes lunch cooked aboard and more time to visit multiple islands or spend longer at each reef. Both include snorkel gear and a marine biologist guide.

What happens if someone in the group is nervous about snorkeling?

The first stop is usually shallow water where you can practice with the gear and build confidence before moving to deeper reefs. The captain and crew are trained to work at your pace, and you're never forced into the water or away from the boat.

Can the captain change the itinerary on the day?

Yes. The captain knows the reefs, islands and conditions, and he'll adjust the stops based on weather, what your group wants to see, or if you'd rather fish, dive or just relax at a beach instead of snorkel the whole time.

What do I need to bring?

Sunscreen and a towel. Snorkel gear, drinks, snacks and lunch (on full-day) are all provided. Wear something you don't mind getting wet, and bring a light layer for the ride back if the sun drops.
