The Experience

I still laugh thinking about how muddy my shoes got before we even reached the first waterfall in El Yunque. We met our guide (Luis, super patient) at this ballpark parking lot in Fajardo—felt a bit odd at first, just waiting with other folks watching chickens peck around. But once we followed him out in our own car and hit the trailhead, it was like stepping into another world: thick green everywhere, air heavy with that sweet wet-leaf smell. Luis kept checking if we were good on the steeper parts—he joked that the mud is “Puerto Rican spa treatment.” I didn’t expect to be slipping and laughing so much before 10am.

The hike isn’t long (maybe 20 minutes to the first pool), but you do scramble over rocks and roots—my legs felt it. When we got to the water, it was cold enough to make me gasp but honestly so clear you could see every pebble. There’s this rope swing hanging from a tree; I hesitated for ages until one of the local guys did a perfect Tarzan yell and flew right in. Peer pressure works—I went for it. The splash was wild, and I got water up my nose but didn’t care. The natural waterslide is slick rock worn smooth by years of people sliding down—my shorts almost stuck at first (should’ve gone faster). Luis took photos of us looking ridiculous mid-slide, which he sent later for free.

We spent maybe two hours just playing—cliff jumps (optional but fun if you don’t mind a little adrenaline), swimming under waterfalls, trying not to lose our helmets in the current. At one point I just floated on my back looking up at these giant ferns dripping water onto my face. Someone handed out chips and water while we sat on warm rocks catching our breath; I remember thinking how weirdly peaceful it felt for such an active trip. It’s not polished or fancy—just real rainforest adventure with a small group and lots of yelling and laughter echoing off the trees.
