The experience
The hike starts on an off-the-beaten-path trail through El Yunque's rain forest, where the guide shares details about the exotic plants and birds you'll pass. The first 20 to 30 minutes of walking is clear and family-friendly, ending at Las Tinajas natural pool and waterfall. Here you can swim in the clear water, grab hold of a swinging rope, or jump from rocks up to 15 feet high if you want the rush. The second part of the day takes another 5 to 10 minutes of hiking to reach a natural pool fed by a 20-foot waterslide, with an optional 3-foot rock jump for those who want it.
You'll need your own rental car to reach the trailhead. Cabs and rideshares don't service the location. The full outing runs about 5.5 hours from start to finish. After the water and the hiking, the day ends at a local beachfront restaurant in Luquillo, where you can have lunch and recover. A life jacket is included, and the guide is fluent in both English and Spanish.
