Step-by-step itinerary
El Yunque Rainforest Adventure
- Hike El Yunque South side rivers
- Explore waterfalls and natural water slides
- Follow secret indigenous trail
- Enjoy scenic views and clean air
- Optional adventure activities or photography
The experience
The hike starts on the South side of El Yunque, where the rivers run and the waterfalls stack up. You'll cross water, wade under falls, and jump into natural pools. The guide carries all the safety gear (helmet, life vest, gloves, rappelling equipment), and stays with you the whole time. Because nothing is mandatory, someone can photograph while another person rappels, and the group doesn't split.
The route traces a path the Taíno people used centuries ago, moving through the forest with views that open as you climb. The guide is local and experienced, trained in both the terrain and the safety protocols that let you move through water and rock without the usual risk. Four hours is the full commitment, and it covers the river system and the trail itself.
Dress in long pants (not jeans), a long-sleeved nylon or polyester shirt, and sneakers: the gear protects you from the forest and the water. Children from age 10 can go if an adult is with them. Tell the operator your weight when you book, since it affects the rappelling setup. A minimum of two people per booking means you're not going alone, and the guide adjusts the pace to the group.
What’s included

Is this one for you?Four hours leaves the rest of your day open for other island activities, but rules out a full-day rainforest itinerary. The optional activities mean you set your own pace: jump and rappel if you want intensity, or stay dry and photograph if you prefer to move at a walk.
