The class runs about two hours at either Guincho or Carcavelos beach depending on your skill and the ocean state. All equipment (wetsuit and board) is provided, along with insurance. You bring only a swimsuit, towel and sun protection.

The experience

Cascais sits on the Portuguese coast with some of the region's most consistent waves, and your instructor picks the beach that matches both your experience and what the ocean is doing that day. The lesson starts on the sand: you learn how to read the spot (the beach shape, wave types, currents, reference points), then move through warm-up and stretching. The instructor walks you through paddling position, how to lie on the board, the take-off technique, and what to watch for in the water. Safety comes first, and so does the setup that lets you actually stand up.

Once you're in the water, the instructor stays close, watching your form, calling out which waves to chase, and correcting your position in real time. The whole thing is built around you relaxing and catching waves, not fighting the ocean. You don't need to own gear or know anything beforehand. Just show up in a swimsuit with a towel and sunscreen. The instructors speak English, Spanish or Portuguese, and they're certified and serious about making the session both safe and fun.
