Small-group surf classes in Ericeira for beginners, intermediate and advanced surfers, taught by professional surfer Joana Andrade and her coaching team. Two-hour sessions include surfing gear, wetsuit, insurance and pickup to Ribeira d'Ilhas Beach. Coaches speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and two additional languages. Children from age 6 are welcome.

The experience

Two hours on the water at Ribeira d'Ilhas Beach means time to find your rhythm without rushing. Progress Surf School builds each lesson around where you actually are, whether you're learning to pop up for the first time or refining your line on bigger swells. Joana Andrade, who founded the school, and her team of professional instructors tailor the session to your level and goals, so a beginner works on fundamentals while an intermediate surfer focuses on technique and wave selection. The small-group format keeps the coaching personal and the feedback immediate.

Everything you need is included: surfboard, wetsuit, and all the gear that usually costs extra elsewhere. The school picks you up and drives you to the break, so you show up ready to paddle out. Insurance and all fees are covered in the price. If you want to see what you did right, and what to work on, you can add video analysis and photos to capture the session.

Coaches speak five languages, so language is not a barrier to understanding the instruction or asking questions in the water. The school's deep knowledge of Ericeira's conditions, tides and beach breaks means you're learning on waves that suit your level on the day you're there, not just wherever the schedule says to go.
