The Experience
"You see those chimneys? They look like giant ice cream cones," Mauro grinned as we craned our necks up at the Sintra National Palace. I’d barely finished my coffee when he picked us up in Lisbon, but somehow his energy was contagious — even before we left the city behind. The drive into Sintra felt like slipping into another world: misty trees, flashes of yellow and red from Pena Palace peeking through the green. I kept rolling down the window just to smell that damp forest air (and okay, maybe because I get carsick on winding roads).
Mauro grew up here — you can tell by how he waves at people on every corner. He told stories about kings and poets between quick turns, and when we reached Quinta da Regaleira, he pointed out carvings I’d never have noticed alone. There was this moment in one of the gardens where everything went quiet except for birdsong and someone’s distant laughter. It’s funny, I thought I’d be most impressed by the palaces (and they are wild — especially Pena Palace with its colors), but it was that hush under the trees that stuck with me.
Cabo da Roca was windier than I expected — hair-whipping, jacket-flapping wind that made us all laugh as we tried to take photos at Europe’s western edge. The lighthouse is older than it looks, standing stubborn against the Atlantic spray since 1772. Mauro handed out little pastries from his backpack (he called them travesseiros) while we watched waves crash far below. We only went inside one palace — honestly, that was enough for me; there’s so much to take in just walking around these places. The whole thing felt unhurried but somehow full — maybe because someone else was doing the driving for once.
