The Experience

The tour moves through Porto on foot, starting with the Carmo Convent and its famous blue-and-white azulejo tile façade, then revealing the twin churches of Carmo and Carmelitas separated by one of the city's narrowest houses. From there, you walk to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Douro River, Ribeira district and the Dom Luís I Bridge: the iron structure designed by a disciple of Gustave Eiffel that dominates the skyline. The guide explains what you're looking at instead of just pointing it out.

The route takes you inside São Bento Railway Station to see more than 20,000 hand-painted azulejo tiles illustrating moments in Portuguese history, then past Livraria Lello, one of the world's most beautiful bookshops, and up to Clérigos Tower, the bell tower designed by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni. You walk Liberdade Square and Avenida dos Aliados, the city's elegant commercial heart, and stand in front of the Porto Cathedral, a Romanesque monument overlooking the river. The Church of São Francisco and the Palace of the Stock Exchange (a 19th-century landmark of Porto's maritime trade) come into view as the walk continues.

The Ribeira district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of colorful riverside houses and narrow streets, anchors the final stretch. You also walk the medieval Fernandine Walls built in the 14th century and pass through one of Porto's oldest gateways. Entry to selected monuments and churches is included whenever possible.
