The Experience

The stairs at Bom Jesus do Monte are the first thing that stuck with me—white stone zig-zagging up through misty green, so many steps I lost count. Our guide, Marta, joked that if we made it to the top without stopping for air, we’d earned our pastel de nata later. She pointed out the tiles—azulejos, blue and chipped in places—and told us how pilgrims used to climb on their knees. The air smelled like wet moss and incense drifting from somewhere inside. I touched the cold railing, just for a second, thinking about all those hands before mine.

Braga itself felt lived-in and proud—old men in pressed shirts chatting under plane trees, teenagers darting between shops. The cathedral was dim and cool; Marta whispered stories about kings buried beneath our feet. I’ll admit I zoned out a bit staring at the flicker of red votive candles. Lunch was loud and simple: bacalhau (I still can’t pronounce it right), crusty bread, something green and garlicky on the side. Someone at another table laughed so hard they snorted wine—felt like everyone knew each other.

The drive to Guimarães blurred past fields and tiled houses. When we reached the castle, it was quieter than I expected—just wind rattling through arrow slits. Inside those thick stone walls you could almost hear armor clanking or maybe just my own shoes echoing around. Marta told us this is where Portugal began (she said “Aqui nasceu Portugal” with a little smile). We wandered crooked lanes after, poking into tiny shops selling embroidered cloths, passing kids kicking a ball in Martins Sarmento Square. I didn’t want to leave yet but time always runs faster on days like this.
