The Experience

“Here, we say Portugal was born,” our guide João said as we stepped onto the cobbles of Guimarães. He grinned, a little proud, a little teasing. The Shrine of Our Lady of Sameiro sits high above Braga — 566 meters up, if you’re counting — and when we got out of the van the air was sharp and piney. Pilgrims were lighting candles near the steps; I could smell wax and something sweet from a vendor nearby. The view over Braga is… well, I won’t try to describe it because my photos didn’t do it justice either. We wandered through Bom Jesus Sanctuary too — all those baroque stairways twisting down through mossy woods. There’s something about Portuguese churches that makes you feel small in a good way.

I didn’t expect lunch to be such a highlight on this day trip from Porto to Braga & Guimarães, but João led us into a family-run spot where they poured Vinho Verde before we’d even sat down properly. It’s fizzy and cold and tastes almost green — not sure how else to put it. The codfish was salty and perfect after all that walking. There was talk at another table about football (always), and an old man winked at me when I tried to order dessert in Portuguese. After lunch we drove on to Guimarães Castle — those thick granite walls look like they’ve been holding up the sky forever.

The historical center is all tangled alleys and iron balconies; kids playing football in little squares where knights probably once rode by. João pointed out where Afonso Henriques might have been born (the first king), but honestly I was more caught up watching two women gossiping under laundry lines strung across the street. The stones are worn smooth from centuries of feet; you can feel history under your shoes here.

I keep thinking about that moment in the cathedral when everything went quiet for just a second — sunlight through stained glass, dust motes floating around us like tiny ghosts.
