The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Porto. You travel north into the Minho region with a private guide and driver in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle — no shared stops, no group schedule. The route takes in Braga Cathedral, built starting in 1509 and now the seat of the Primate Archbishop of Portugal; the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, a pilgrimage site with a monumental Baroque stairway that climbs 116 meters; and the Church of São Francisco, begun in 1400 with royal permission. The day runs seven to nine hours depending on how long you linger at each stop.

Guimaraes holds the second half. You see Guimaraes Castle, built in the 10th century to defend the monastery from Moors and Norsemen, and the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, a medieval estate in the historical centre. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, a collegiate church classified as a National Monument, sits at the heart of the old town. The Toural, once a 17th-century fairground, is now the city's central square. If you want lunch, your guide can book a reservation at one of the best restaurants in the region and work the meal into the timing — you choose what suits your appetite and pace.

Because the vehicle and guide are yours alone, the itinerary is flexible. You can spend extra time at a castle, skip a church if another interests you more, or adjust the route based on what you want to see. The guide knows the history and the region; you decide how deep to go.
