The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the echo of footsteps—ours and everyone else’s—bouncing off those stone alleys near Clérigos Tower. Our guide, Joana, waved us over to a tiny bakery window (I could smell warm bread even before she said anything), and just like that we were nibbling on something sweet and flaky while she told us how Porto got its name. I didn’t expect to laugh so much hearing about city hall politics, but here we were, grinning at stories about stubborn mayors and shipbuilders from centuries ago.
I’d seen photos of Livraria Lello before but walking through its doors was something else. The staircase looked like it belonged in a dream—red velvet underfoot, sunlight catching the dust in the air. I tried to snap a photo but mostly just stood there gawking while Joana pointed out carvings I would’ve missed. There was a moment outside Carmo Convent where the blue-and-white tiles glowed in the afternoon light—honestly, my phone camera couldn’t do it justice. Some guy next to us muttered “wow” in French; Joana just smiled like she’d heard it a thousand times.
We wandered through São Bento Railway Station and I nearly tripped staring up at those azulejos—twenty thousand of them, apparently. It was busy but somehow peaceful too, like everyone slowed down for just a second to look around. Crossing Dom Luis I Bridge later felt almost unreal—the wind off the Douro River made my eyes water (or maybe that was just me). At some point Joana asked if we wanted to see where Henry the Navigator was born; I didn’t know much about him before but now his name sticks with me.
By the time we reached the Palace of the Stock Exchange, my feet were tired but my head felt full in a good way. There’s something about Porto that lingers—I still think about that view from the bridge at dusk. If you’re thinking about this private walking tour of Porto, go hungry and curious. The city will meet you there.
