The Experience

The tour starts at the Portuguese Centre of Photography and moves through the oldest parts of the city on foot. You'll see the Porto Cathedral, one of Portugal's oldest monuments, then walk to São Bento Railway Station, where the tile panels and French-influenced architecture from 1916 fill the interior. A stop at a historic Belle Époque coffee shop on Santa Catarina street (carved wood, mirrors, chandeliers, ranked among the world's most beautiful) sits between the market and the church. The Bolhão market itself is a neoclassical building organized by product: fish, meat, vegetables, flowers, with shops outside selling coffee and clothes.

The Clérigos Church and Tower anchor the walk. The tower is Porto's trademark, designed by architect Nicolau Nasoni in Baroque style and a National Monument since 1910. From there, the route reaches Livraria Lello, the bookstore that inspired the Hogwarts staircases in Harry Potter: JK Rowling lived in Porto and the staircase design came from here. The Ribeira neighborhood, one of the city's oldest areas along the river and part of the UNESCO list, fills with restaurants and bars. The walk closes with views of Ponte de Dom Luís I, the iron bridge built between 1881 and 1888 that connects Porto and Gaia.
