The Experience

I nearly walked right past our guide at São Bento Station—he was waving with one hand and balancing a pastel de nata in the other. “You have to try this first,” he said, and honestly, I didn’t argue. The station itself is wild—those blue-and-white tiles everywhere, people coming and going, echoes bouncing off stone. He pointed out a mural showing some battle from ages ago (I forgot which), but what stuck with me was how he described his grandmother taking the train here as a girl. It made the place feel less like a museum and more like someone’s living room, just bigger and echoier.

We wandered through Miragaia next, which felt like stepping sideways in time—laundry flapping over narrow streets, an old man nodding at us from his doorstep. My shoes squeaked on the stones (should’ve worn something softer), but it was worth it for the smell of river air mixed with frying sardines somewhere nearby. Our guide—João—knew everyone. He stopped to chat with a woman selling figs; she handed me one without asking for money. Maybe that’s normal here? I still think about that fig sometimes.

The market was chaos in the best way: shouting vendors, piles of oranges so bright they almost hurt my eyes, little kids darting between stalls. João found me staring at some weird-looking cheese and just grinned—“Try it or regret forever,” he said. I did try it (salty, tangy, not sure I loved it) but hey, no regrets now. We ended up by the river in Ribeira where street musicians played something mournful and beautiful at the same time. The sun hit the water just right and for a second everything went quiet except for those notes drifting over cobblestones.
