The Experience

We stepped onto the Sunseeker at Marina do Freixo just as the river was catching that late afternoon gold — you know that soft light that makes everything feel kind of suspended? Tiago, our skipper (and apparently boat-fixer-upper extraordinaire), handed us little glasses of port before we even sat down. I remember my friend Ana nearly tripped over her own feet because she was too busy gawking at the flybridge. The deck smelled faintly of varnish and something citrusy — maybe from someone’s cologne or maybe just the river air.

As we glided out, Tiago pointed at the Dom Luis Bridge and started telling us how his dad used to fish right under it, back when there were fewer tourists and more sardines. We passed under six bridges in total — each one with its own story, some grand, some just quietly practical. I didn’t expect to care about bridges, honestly, but there’s something about seeing Porto from the water that makes you pay attention to all those iron arches and old stones. The city looks different from here; even Ribeira’s pastel buildings seem softer somehow.

The cheese board came out around Arrábida Bridge — slices of cured ham curling up at the edges in the sun, crumbly cheese that left salt on my fingers. There was sparkling wine too (I think it was from somewhere near Amarante?), cold enough to make my teeth hurt a bit. Someone put on music through the Bluetooth speaker, but mostly we just listened to the water slap against the hull and watched little fishing boats zigzagging across our path. At one point I tried to say “obrigado” properly and Tiago laughed — apparently my accent is hopeless.

The whole private yacht cruise felt relaxed but personal, like visiting someone’s backyard except their backyard is 20km of river lined with history and colored tiles. We turned back near where the Douro meets the Atlantic — you could smell salt then, mixed with something green from upriver. The sun was lower by then and everything got quieter for a bit. I still think about that view sometimes when I hear seagulls at home.
