experience

What’s the experience like?

I almost missed the meeting spot at Jardim do Morro because I got distracted by this old man selling roasted chestnuts — the smell was everywhere, sweet and smoky. Our guide Ana found me (she just laughed and said she does the same every time) and we set off down these tiny winding streets in Vila Nova de Gaia. It’s funny, you always hear about “the other side of the river” in Porto but it feels like a different world once you cross. The air was damp, a little salty from the Douro, and everyone seemed to know Ana — people waved or shouted little hellos as we passed.

First stop: pastries. I tried saying "pastel de nata" properly but honestly, I probably butchered it. The bakery was warm inside, smelled like cinnamon and butter, and there was this old lady behind the counter who insisted I try her favorite one (I still have no idea what it was called). Then Ana led us into the oldest port wine cave in Portugal — it’s dark and cool down there, bottles stacked everywhere like some secret library. We tasted four kinds of port; one of them burned a little going down but left this weirdly comforting sweetness after. Ana told stories about King Joseph I and how the place started out — she made history sound less like school and more like gossip.

I didn’t expect to like alheira sausage as much as I did (it’s garlicky? smoky? hard to describe), but the real surprise was how proud everyone is of their food here. At one point we ended up at this tiny spot where they serve bacalhau — dried cod — and there was graffiti all over the walls outside; Ana said some of it changes every week so you never know what you’ll see. The francesinha sandwich came last, messy with sauce dripping everywhere. A guy at another table winked when he saw me try to eat it without making a mess (impossible). There’s something about eating with your hands that makes you feel like you belong for a minute.

I keep thinking about those narrow Gaia streets at dusk, lights flickering on above us while people leaned out their windows to talk across alleys. Not everything went smoothly (my shoes got soaked in a puddle), but honestly that made it better somehow — more real.
