The experience

The tour starts in central Lisbon and moves through the city on two wheels, passing under the 25th of April Bridge (the landmark that resembles San Francisco's Golden Gate), and riding through Pink Street, the neighborhood named for its painted pavement and known for nightlife. You'll stop at Commerce Square, the most important plaza in the city, and at Time Out Market, where you can see fresh produce and sample Portuguese food if you want to linger.

The route heads west toward Belém, where the real landmarks cluster. You'll see the Monument to the Discoveries, which honors the Portuguese navigators who mapped sea routes between 1427 and 1540, then reach Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery: both UNESCO World Heritage sites. The guide will explain why each one matters and where to stand for the best photographs. You'll also pass M.A.A.T., the modern museum designed by British architect Amanda Levete, whose rooftop offers views across the Tagus River to São Jorge Castle.

The pace is easy and the tour is designed for all fitness levels, though it does involve four hours of riding. Your guide is a volunteer, so the bike rental is what you pay for upfront.
