The experience

"You see that tower out there?" our guide said, pointing across the water toward Belém Tower. "That's where the ships left. That's where Portugal decided the world was bigger than anyone thought." We started in Afonso de Albuquerque Gardens, a green square tucked into Belém that most tourists walk past without stopping.
